ADULT GROUPS & ACTIVITIES
Adult Education Committee: This group provides new forms of intellectually challenging adult education opportunities, i.e., special keynote speakers with follow-up discussions.
Archives Committee: The committee collects and records documents, photographs, and other existing artifacts related to the history of St. George's parish. They are also aiming to raise awareness of our parish history.
Bible Study Groups: These groups meet at various times during the week - some in the afternoon and some in the evening. Three or four sessions of 8 to 10 weeks duration are held throughout the year. For some sessions, a relevant theological book is read and discussed. For others, a biblical book or theme is the topic for a series of sessions. Meeting times are announced in the weekly Carillon.
Catering for Special Needs: This group of people responds to special requests to provide lunches for church funerals, for shut-in luncheons, etc. While several of these people come to the church to serve the lunches, they call upon many other members of the congregation to send in sandwiches, cakes, cookies, etc. So even if you are unavailable to help on any occasion, your assistance in providing food when requested is most appreciated.
Chancel Guild: This guild is responsible for preparing the altars and the sacred vessels for all services that are held in the church and chapel. As well, at festival times, such as Christmas, Easter, and Harvest, they decorate the interior of the church. Some members deliver the altar flowers after our Sunday morning services to those in the parish who are sick, shut in, or celebrating a special event in their lives.
Chi Rho Fellowship: This group usually meets on the first Friday evening of each month. The program varies from month to month and provides good social contacts for those in the 40+ age bracket. Yearly projects include sponsoring a Dessert and Card Party in the fall and providing the lunch for the parish on the Sunday when our Church School presents its Christmas pageant.
Communion Assistants: These people are appointed by the rector to assist in our Eucharistic liturgies by administering the chalice at the time of Communion. Some of them are also trained to take the Reserved Sacrament to those confined to their homes, and those living in nursing and retirement homes. The usual appointment is for a three-year term.
Community Book Club: This small group began meeting on monthly basis this year to discuss a book chosen by the members of the group. New members are always welcome. The titles of the books and meeting times are announced in the weekly Carillon.
Library Volunteers: A new librarian has just begun to coordinate the work that is required to keep the library organinzed. He is in need of volunteers to assist him with the ongoing upkeep of our parish library so that the books are available to people after each Sunday service.
Men of St. George's: On the second Wednesday evening of every month from September to June, the men of the parish gather for dinner and to hear a guest speaker. Each evening usually begins with a social time at 6:00 pm and dinner is served at 6:30 pm. Just a phone call to the organizers reserves a place whenever one wishes to attend.
Nursery Support Group: This group takes responsibility for seeing that our nursery is staffed with competent adult caregivers for 10:30 am service every Sunday. They also make sure that the toys and equipment are clean and in good condition.
Nursery Volunteers: These people take turns providing child care at 10:30 am service for those children who are too young to attend Church School classes.
Office Volunteers: From time to time when there are large mailings that must be distributed throughout the parish, this group meets during the day to collate the material and organize it for distribution. As well, one or two people are usually collate The Carillon in preparation for the following Sunday.
Social Justice & Outreach Committee: This committee, which meets monthly, aims to focus the attention of the parish on the needs beyond the parish. Local projects, such as our support of Stepping Stones and the Community Dinners held at Chalmers Church, and the work of the wider Church through the Primate's World Relief and Development Fund are a few areas of concern. The money raised through projects such as the "Soup and Buns Lunches" provides some funds for these projects.
Parish Guild: This dedicated group of women tries to maintain the interior of the rectory and the church parlour and to share in the upkeep of the church kitchen. They meet on the first Thursday afternoon of the month. They derive their money from memberships, rummage sales, Lenten luncheons, and from their participation in the Parish Festival. New members are always welcome.
Readers/Lectors: At all of our worship services, people from the congregation participate by reading the lessons. Before being involved on a Sunday morning, there is the opportunity to come in for "training and practice" so that the reading of the lessons enhances our worship.
Senior Choir: This choir of 30 voices sings the 10:30 am liturgy which is traditional, with wide-ranging musical styles. The choir rehearses on Thursday evenings at 7:30 pm and on Sunday mornings at 10:00 am from September through May. During the year, special events, such as the Good Friday liturgy, the Community Carol Sing in Advent, and the service of Lessons and Carols for Christmas, require choral leadership. A steady commitment and some music reading ability are required for membership in the choir.
Sidespersons: At each of our worship services on Sundays and special occasions, parishioners and visitors are welcomed by women and men (sometimes) accompanied by their young children) who greet them and give them our weekly bulletin. As well, they assist by taking up the offering.
St. George's Express Couriers: Whenever there is a mailing to the entire parish, these parishioners deliver the mail to the households on their routes. While the parish saves a large amount of money in mailing costs, these couriers form a most valuable network. Their knocks on doors throughout the parish have resulted in the office being informed that someone has moved, that someone has become too frail to attend church any longer, etc. If you cannot be a regular courier, we are always in need of additional volunteers to fill in for couriers who are unable to deliver their routes on some occasions.
St. George's Express Telephoners: Whenever there is a parish mailing, this group springs into action and telephones our couriers to let them know that there is mail ready for delivery.
Recorded Ministry: The 10:30 am service is recorded every Sunday morning and then copies of the CD are made for those parishioners who are unable to attend the service but still want to share in the worship experiences here at St. George's. A number of parishioners make the weekly calls to deliver the CDs.
